Future Areas of Research

The Institute is concerned for development in the Commonwealth of 54 states, where its own unique strengths, of quality research united with high-level advocacy, can make a difference. The institution of the Ramphal Commissioners, begun with the Ramphal Commission on Migration and Development chaired by Mr P J Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica, is a pioneering technique now being applied to the difficult area of visa simplification.

In planning ahead the Institute and its Trustees will build on the issues a) outlined in the reports from that Ramphal Commission; b) the extensive intellectual and diplomatic legacy of the period in office of Sir Shridath Ramphal ( Secretary-General, 1975-1990 ); c) current priorities for development set by Commonwealth Heads of Government; and d) the advice of Trustees, Patrons and policymakers.

In selecting new priorities it will have regard to the human and financial resources it can enlist, avoidance of duplication, and opportunities for original contributions by the Commonwealth to the well-being of its peoples and the global community.
